The fan arts usually refer to the artworks by amateur artists, or artists who are unpaid for their fan creations. This means a professional comic adaptation of The Lord Of The Rings movie would not be considered as fanart.

What is Fan Art?
Fan art or sometimes written as fanart is the artwork that is based on a character, costume, item, or story that was created by someone else other than the original artist. This term is usually used to refer to art derived from visual media such as cartoons, movies, comics, video games and even characters from books. There is a lot of fan art today like the artwork depicting Naruto from Naruto Series, or Son Goku as a Super Saiyan 5 from DragonBall, or Edward Elric pose form FullMetal Alchemist, or Wolverine action from X-Men comics or even Roan from the Ragnarok Online Multiplayer Game.
